< Veils of Personas >

Veils of Personas is a sculptural series exploring the mask as a response to political, social, cultural, and gendered pressures. Inspired by questions surrounding the faceless woman in Lady of the Land, the work considers whether identity is freely chosen or shaped by the conditions in which one must survive. Each mask embodies a different form of concealment and protection: an embroidered mask connects identity to cultural inheritance, a cement mask evokes confinement, surveillance, and the weight of imposed restrictions, while a clay mask covered with olive leaves connects identity to Palestinian land, livelihood, and threatened olive trees. Together, the masks transform facelessness from an absence into multiple possible identities, revealing concealment not simply as hiding, but as a strategy of survival, protection, and resistance.
